tattoo removal

Prior to treatment you must first undergo a consultation where details about your medical history are obtained in order to confirm suitability. Before proceeding you will be asked to sign a consent form and undergo a test patch.

Dermatologists acknowledge using an Active Q-Switch laser to remove unwanted multi-coloured tattoos, as the "gold standard" treatment. Its efficacy and safety have been proved in numerous clinical trials, and outcomes are reliable with minimum risk of scarring.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?

As the tattoo ink is injected into the skin, the pigment becomes encapsulated in a band of collagen, and is too large to be removed by normal body defence mechanisms. Tattoos typically lie between 0.5 and 2.5mm into the dermis. The Q- Switch laser tattoo removal works by fragmenting the ink particles and breaking down the collagen wall so that the normal body defences are able to absorb the tattoo.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?

The number of treatments required depends on several factors, including the density and colour of inks and the age of the tattoo. Typically 6 - 12 treatments are required every 6 - 10 weeks apart. Amateur tattoos can be quick to remove taking between 1 - 6 treatments. For patients who wish to cover up old tattoo may find only a few treatments are necessary.

HOW DOES THE LASER TREATMENT FEEL?

Most patients describe the sensation as similar to a hot pinprick or the flick of an elastic band. Whilst mildly uncomfortable, most people tolerate treatment well. A skin-cooling device may be utilised to reduce any discomfort.

HOW DOES THE SKIN LOOK AFTER TREATMENT?

An instant whitening of the skin is seen after treatment, but this generally fades quickly. The area is likely to feel tender for a few hours and can be red and swollen for up to 72 hours. Some tattoos will form a graze, which must be left to heal naturally. Initially the tattoo is unlikely to look any different but will fade over the next 4 - 8 weeks as the body disperses it.

If there is any bleeding a dressing will be applied to prevent infection. It is recommended that you reguarlly massage, with aloe vera, the treated area to help speed up the bodies ability to disperse the ink. It is also important to drink 5 to 10 glasses of water for the first 3 days to assist lymphatic drainage.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Very rarely the skin may become lighter or darker, or a small blister may form. Change to skin texture and scarring is possible, though uncommon, and is more likely if any grazes are not allowed to heal naturally. There may be loss of the natural tanning ability in the area treated, which usually improves with time.
